Sunday 06:36
This is a real Sunday It’s dragging the day along Rain is dripping down on me Acid in my eyes As I wipe it out with the backs of my hands I hear myself singing a little poem It popped up like a mushroom Pushing its small white hat above the ground Words can be sweet The cracking of the skin of a perfect cherry And the cool taste is running into my mouth Alcohol Be silent, it’s better not to speak sometimes It’s alright, better not to speak sometimes ‘Cause it is a rare thing for me to hear my heart sing I am projecting you leaning against a brick wall Or upon the grey sky, the biggest screen of all And I’m hiding away inside my coat ‘cause I don’t want to run into anyone I know cause sometimes Words can be sour Like putting a bottle of milk to my lips and discovering It has already gone bad, poison Be silent, it’s better not to speak sometimes It’s alright, better not to speak sometimes ‘Cause it is a rare thing for me to hear my heart sing Poison

Blue Light 05:24
What is this ? I think I saw you in the crowd What is this? Blood is running to my head A blue light from above is shining on your face What is this? Are you the one I think you are Talk to me I have missed you so much Did you come down to guide and to protect me And I didn’t look before I crossed the street Then I felt a pain in the backs of my knees There I was stretched out on the pavement And you were sitting there beside me I want to call you by your name But no sound will come out my throat Grab you at your waste Hands are made of jelly What is this? I think I’d like to go sleep Talk to me I have missed you so much Did you come down to guide and to protect me There’s a circle of faces above my head Whispering: she’s fading away There I was stretched out on the pavement And you were sitting there beside me I want to call you by your name But no sound will come out my throat Grab you at your waste Hands are made of jelly Arms are made of rubber Heart is heavy like a piece of led I want to call you by your name But no sound will come out my throat Grab you at your waste Hands are made of jelly I want to call you by your name But no sound will come out my throat Grab you at your waste Hands are made of jelly Arms are made of rubber Heart is heavy like a piece of led What is this ? I think I saw you in the crowd What is this ? Blood is running to my head A blue light from above shining on your face

Lovely 07:27
We are being blinded by the sunrays Through our eyelashes everything is shiny Like the roofs of the cars And smoky trails of aeroplanes Lovely, lovely, lovely Like daffodils and forget me nots We are laying down on a green lawn Arms stretched breathing in the warmed up air And the weight of the sky is pressing down on our chests Lovely, lovely, lovely Like daffodils and forget me nots You clasp your hands around my wrist Squeeze and twist until it hurts To let me know that we’re the same kind Lovely, lovely, lovely ...

I went to launderette I feed my stuff into the mouth Of one of the machines I saw you behind the little windowsaw your face through the porthole I am in a vacuum While everyone is rushing by To offices and hairdressers I am only killing time Waiting for the sun to set Waiting for you to appear Not in my mind but in the flesh The humming and the buzzing Creep into my ears Making me feel drowsy Singing me to sleep Suddenly my heart contracts At the thought that you might not show up That you might have forgotten me While conquering the seas I saw you behind the little window I saw your face through the porthole I am in a vacuum While everyone is rushing by To offices and hairdressers I am only killing time Waiting for the sun to set Waiting for you to appear Not in my mind but in the flesh I am in a vacuum While everyone is rushing by To offices and hairdressers And I am only killing time I am only killing time Waiting for the sun to set Waiting for you to appear Not in my mind but in the flesh I am in a vacuum While everyone is rushing by To hospitals and funerals And I am only killing time I am only killing time Waiting for the sun to set Waiting for you to appear Not in my mind but in the flesh I am in a vacuum While everyone is rushing by To offices and hairdressers And I am only killing time I am only killing time Waiting for the sun to set Waiting for you to appear Not in my mind but in the flesh I am in a vacuum While everyone is rushing by To appointments that cannot be missed And I am only killing time I am only killing time Waiting for the sun to set Waiting for you to appear Not in my mind but in the flesh

Chelsea is my horse We came het in a rush She has the biggest eyes I’ve ever seen The air was cold as ice It was blowing through my clothes I told her to hang on another mile Then Chelsea saw the lights Of the house between the oaks Now that’s a home I led her by the harness We walked around the house I called at the backdoor Is there anybody there to feed a girl and a horse And celebrate the last day of 1792 Chelsea and me Never will we part She’s my only friend Chelsea and me Travel round the world Never will we part Chelsea and me Travel round the world

I’m the birthday girl they’re all waiting for me to perform Blow those candles blow them out they’re waiting for me to perform I am frozen to my chair to many eyes are staring at my mouth I’m the birthday girl, there’s nothing to be happy about I want you all to go away I want you all to go away This is a special day to celebrate the night that I was born This is a special day, they’re all waiting for me to perform I’m the birthday girl flames are dancing on my cake I’m the birthday girl, I’m the birthday I want you all to go away I want you all to go away I want you all to go away I want you all to go away I want you all to go away I want to vanish through the keyhole and slip under the carpet and dissolve in my lemonade I want to be brave and get up on the table and chase everyone of you away And when I’d make a wish I would wish to be alone If I could use witchcraft I’d turn you all into stone I want you all to go I’m the birthday girl they’re all waiting for me to perform Blow those candles blow them out they’re waiting for me to perform I want to vanish through the keyhole and slip under the carpet and dissolve in my lemonade I want to be brave and get up on the table and chase everyone of you away And when I’d make a wish I would wish to be alone If I could use witchcraft I’d turn you all into stone I want you all to go I want you all to go away I want you all to go away I want you all to go away I want you all to go away I’m the birthday girl they’re all waiting for me to perform

Just as he was stepping through the door He felt a sort of shiver down his spine Pearls of sweat were on his forehead were dripping of his forehead He shirt was sticking to his back It’s only a short walk to the car he thought Only a short drive home But the ship was being wrecked before it could reach the shore He was swaying like a drunk his feet wouldn’t carry him no more The earth is shaking A man is going down His heart couldn’t take it A man is going down His body’s laying right outside his office The doorman called the doctor and his wife There are noses that are pressed against the windows His dark brown were staring at the sky He can’t believe that it’s already over He can’t believe he’s already gone It seldom crossed his mind that he was mortal He’d been working like a madman he’d been cheering himself on The earth is shaking A man is going down His heart couldn’t take it A man is going down Goodbye to the roses Goodbye to the dogs Goodbye to everyone who’s still alive Goodbye The earth is shaking A man is going down His heart couldn’t take it A man is going down The clouds are breaking A man is going down His heart couldn’t take it The earth is shaking His heart couldn’t take it A man is going down

Been juggling and puzzling Been staying up all night Been tempted not to turn the wheel To make the car fly Been glued to your couches Facing the stars Taking mouthfuls of chocolate Peanut butter straight from the jar Lay your head down when it’s too heavy on you Been polluting your poor minds By repeating the same thought Been pacing up and down your rooms Like troubled brides and nervous grooms Been repeating the same songs Been closed in by the silence It's pressing down like the heat Been longing so much to drift away Forgotten how to fall asleep Lay your head down when it’s too heavy on you Let your thoughts fly when they are bothering you

When I’m near you I’m like an alien All my words have dried up And your voice is sounding like we’re under water It’s hard for me to concentrate I keep looking up at the surface A pale light is working its way down And I’m staring at your face But I’m too much of a coward to look into your eyes I can’t breathe I’ve swallowed up the time My heart is pounding much to loud I can’t breathe You ask me if I’m alright I must be looking kind of ghostly You’re taking me outside for some fresh night air And I’m caught by the beauty of the many stars I think that I am hypnotized Or I must have left my body I seem to be looking down on myself And I want to say something that matters But nothing comes out I can’t breathe I’ve swallowed up the time My heart is pounding much to loud I can’t breathe And I’m staring at your face But I’m too much of a coward to look into your eyes I can’t breathe I’ve swallowed up the time My heart is pounding much to loud I can’t breathe I can’t breathe

I am a red and green rocket I was born at fireworks factory A Chinese girl put me in a box She wished me good luck I travelled for weeks over land and water Until I arrived at a small town And I laid there on the shelf with my sisters and brothers Until was sold He carried me hid me under his bed And when the clock struck twelve he took me outside He lit my tail with a burning match I was shooting myself into the sky He carried me home I was shooting myself into the sky Sky... Sky... Sky... I am a red and green rocket...

Living in a flat in the 27th Floor with people living under above and aside Don’t greet your neighbours more than they greet you Sometimes you’re afraid that the lift will get stuck or that you’ll break your leg and no one will notice Or when you’ll have some bad luck you’ll jump down But standing on your balcony with your head in a cloud Living with the world at your feet You feel like a king with diamonds on his crown Waving at people he will never meet

about

4th release of our 2021 Bandcamp reissue series. Includes an exclusive Bandcamp only bonus track.

"The whimsiness and quality awareness that speak from Lovely are a breath of fresh air. Tranquil atmospheric pop music" (Music Maker)

"Intense, fragile pop. Strongest point: the emotional melancholy vocals of Ciska Ruitenberg who even makes the word 'Lovely' sound like 'Lonely'" (Avantgarde)

Spot's Lovely (1998) was the third Steamin'Soundworks release. It has continued to distinguish itself from our other releases as it was the only 'real band' recording. Drums! Bass! Inventive guitars! Vocals! Studio sessions! Major distribution! Club tour! Press promotion! Festivals! Singles! Videoclip! All in all, a creative adventure not to be missed and to look back on with pleasure and gratitude.

Comparisons with other bands are faulty. Spot intended to express 'The Great Feeling' in a small way, resulting in cinematic pop music with captivating lyrics in which time stands still while everything flashes by at the same time. Core members were Ciska Ruitenberg (vocals) and Edwin de Herder (guitars, keyboards, percussion, ambient sounddesign, vocals) with Bas Cloo (bass, vocals) and Eric Sondorp (drums) as a solid rhythm tandem, further assisted by a variety of guest musicians.

The basic tracks were recorded in an abandoned farm with nothing more than 2 ADAT recorders, some tube microphones and a mixing console. Not a fancy studio, but an almost commune-like setting where the traditionally made songs developed to full maturity in a thoughtful way. The more complex arrangements were added later in recording engineer Steve Phillips' studio. At the instigation of Steamin'Soundworks final production was done by Hanyo van Oosterom, Jurgen Brouwer and Edwin de Herder. Not an obvious choice, but the added 'ambient treatments' created an essential and substantial space that gave the songs on LOVELY the extra dimension it needed.
